Caterpillar CostumeThe Caterpillar Costume is becoming popular and can be worn by newborns, toddlers and adults. You can avail of these costumes in stores and you can also make them at home. These costumes can be very colorful and are usually popular during Halloween and in costume parties. The caterpillar costume can be made in variety ways and each costume will have a different look to it.

You can do this simple task by using a few yards of fabric, a black ski hat, black pipe cleaners, 1/4 inch elastic, needle and thread, plastic grocery bags and your child’s black turtleneck shirt and black pants. First thing to do is to measure your child’s breast, waist and hip. Then split them in 1/2.

Next, pick three colors of fabric measuring one yard 45×36″each. They can be all greens. You could also pick brights, variegated solids or anything that screams Caterpillar.

Take the measurements that you got from your child and divide it by 2. Then cut 4 strips, of each color of fabric, the length of the 1/2 measurements, each being 6 inches wide. Cut 2 pieces of elastic the same length as each strip. After this, cut a total of four pieces, the same length, in each color, for each tube.

The next thing to do is to iron each strip and turn over outside Lengthwise edge 1/3 inch. This is for the elastic to be sewn. You place elastic inside the ironed casing. Next, sew elastic inside that casing on each edge. When done, you should have 12 lengthwise strips, each with an overturned edge with elastic sewn into the casings.

Proceed with making the layout of each strip, right sides up and place two pipe cleaners in the middle. Match each strip right sides together. Sew the 5 1/3 width edges with the matching strips and the pipe cleaners inside. Turn the tubes with right sides out. When you are done with this step you should come up with 6 tubes with two of each color and one pipe cleaner in the middle of each seam waving at you.

Make 24 3” circles with 8 of each color using the last six inches of your colors. In this step you will use 24 circles. Glue two circles together with the end of the pipe cleaner inserted into the middle of each circle. When done you should see one tube, with two pipe-cleaners and a circle of fabric sandwiched over each pipe-cleaner. These will be the caterpillar legs.

This time, place the black ski hat on your child’s head. Decide where you would place the pipe cleaners. Remove the hat. Poke the pipe cleaners into the hat and put them together and twist. To flatten out the knot use a pliers. Cut 4 3” circles in the color you prefer and follow the same procedure as the caterpillar legs. Use your needle and thread and make a whip stitch around the pipe-cleaner into the top of the hat and secure.

Dress your child in the black turtleneck and pants. You can now place the tubes in whatever order you wish for the caterpillar.

To make your caterpillar more attractive you may decorate tubes and feet with felt circles, buttons, ribbons and sequins.

As for an adult a bizarre looking Caterpillar Costume is also available.  This can be slid over the body, and has an opening for the face. This costume is made of foam which is of a sturdy type, and is blue color. What gives this outfit a unique look are the three pairs of arms and three pairs of legs sticking out on the top and at the bottom respectively. The hands have white gloves and the feet have yellow shoes which have a curled tip.

A caterpillar costume might not be as popular as the other costumes but varieties in making it will surely make a difference.
